Molding Basics Workshop

Saturday, September 23

10 AM- 1 PM

NEW & Special Offer!!

3 hour workshop for Artsbridge members

Are you the kind of artist who has an urge to learn how to create other forms of art and explore new possibilities with other types of media?

This class is designed for Sculptors and other Art Makers. The workshop will offer an exploration and step by step processes of the many ways you can use molds to make, reproduce objects and create forms. Some methods will be familiar to you, and some you will never have seen before. It will be a grand overview of techniques and materials you can replicate in your studio.

A mold can help you produce a form that you can't model yourself, or it can be a quick way to take a form, and reproduce dozens of them. You’ll learn about the following types of molds:

Plaster molds~ one of the most versatile and economical types of mold.

AlginateMolds~ perfect for making safe molds of hands and faces, and gives incredible detail. Moulage molds are a more economical alternative to Alginate.

Rubber molds~ the real workhorse of molds that allow you to mold intricate objects. Rubber can be used to cast plaster, wax, resin, etc.

Sand molds~ the kinds of molds that can allow you to cast metal in your simple backyard foundry. These can be simple one piece molds or complicated multi piece molds. We'll cover chemically bonded molds, and Green sand molds.

Metal molds~ found object molds, and more. A mold can help you produce a form that you can not model yourself, or it can be a quick way to take a form, and reproduce dozens of them.

Photos are also a good way to capture your thoughts. Your instructor will provide all the techniques and tips to create your own moldings and will answer questions there and any you may think of when you get home.

*As this class offers the basics and more, you may want to continue with a 5-6 day workshop which will allow you to make molds in Mahon's studio to bring home and continue the processes of creating sculpture art.

About Your Instructor:

Rory Mahon grew up in NYC and attending The Cooper Union-BFA, he moved to Princeton, NJ to begin a very long relationship with the Johnson Atelier. There, Mahon co-started and ran the Sand Foundry for many years, seeing to the casting of work by World class Sculptors, and teaching apprentices sand molding skills

Rory Mahon has had extensive teaching and workshop experience at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Grounds for Sculpture, Artworks Trenton, etc. Also ran many Workshops and demos at International Sculpture Conferences in America, Canada and Europe. Mahon currently runs his own Photography, Sculpture Studio and Foundry at his home studio in Hopewell Township, NJ where he teaches classes.

Simplify and Streamline Your Plein Air Painting Experience

2-Day Oil Painting Workshop with Matt DeProspero, in Lambertville, NJ

Dates: Wednesday, May 10th and Thursday, May 11th

Time: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm each day

Price: $125 per person

Limited to 10 participants, open to all levels of experience

Join local artist Matt DeProspero for this two-day plein air workshop in downtown Lambertville. He will show you the methods and materials he uses to simplify the outdoor painting process and help you to work more efficiently and consistently, building on your successes from one painting to the next.

On the first day of the workshop, the instructor will demonstrate a plein air painting from start to finish as he discusses every aspect of the process, from site selection to composition, various color palettes, and all the materials and tools he employs. Students will then choose their own painting locations within a designated area and create small thumbnail sketches to work out compositional ideas, so when they return the following day, they’ll be able to jump right into making their own paintings and putting into practice what they have learned. Along the way, Matt will provide individual feedback and guidance to each artist, helping them complete their plein air studies.

After registration, each student will receive a welcome letter with all pertinent details of the workshop, including a materials list.  Rain Date to be determined, as needed.

Alan Goldstein: Elemental

Using the language of abstraction, New Hope-based painter Alan Goldstein (b. 1938) explores nature, the human figure, and mortality in his large-scale paintings, drawings, and sculpture. Goldstein works in concert with his media, whether oil paint, acrylic, ink, charcoal, or pastel, to express the underlying structure and processes of the world around him, finding beauty and emotional power in unexpected places. Curated by Chief Curator Laura Turner Igoe, this exhibition presents over four decades of the artist’s work and will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.

Alan Goldstein received his BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) and MFA from the Pratt Institute in New York. He has been a resident of Bucks County since the 1970s, when he started teaching drawing and painting at Bucks County Community College. His work is represented in over 70 private collections in the United States and abroad, and he has exhibited his work at the Michener Art Museum, the Woodmere Art Museum, and Art Works in Trenton, New Jersey, among other institutions. Since 2003, he has been a Professor Emeritus at Bucks County Community College.

Mid-Century to Manga: The Modern Japanese Print in America

Mid-Century to Manga celebrates the historical and continued local interest in Japanese and Japanese American printmaking and illustration. The exhibition traces the story of the modern sōsaku-hanga (or “creative prints”) movement and other creative collectibles across the past century–from Japan to the United States and beyond.

The exhibition will feature 75 prints on paper, over two dozen of which have never been on display at the Michener Art Museum before (such as Kiyoshi Saitō’s Winter in Aizu series).

Highlighting a prominent local story, the central feature of the exhibition is the display of three original copies of James Michener’s 1962 book The Modern Japanese Print: An Appreciation. This very large folio (each is approximately two-feet tall and three-feet wide when opened) contains signed original woodblock prints by modern Japanese printmakers Hiratsuka Un’Ichi, Maekawa Sempan, Mori Yoshitoshi, Watanabe Sadao, Kinoshita Tomio, Shima Tamami, Azechi Umetaro, Iwami Reika, Yoshida Masaji, and Maki Haku.

For this project, the Michener Art Museum is engaging regional partners at the University of Pennsylvania to provide specific content-area expertise, with curation by the History of Art Department Chair, Julie Nelson Davis, and support from curatorial fellows Marina De Melo Do Nascimento, Maria Puzyreva, and Nicholas M Purgett.

Mid-Century to Manga: The Modern Japanese Print in America has been generously supported by the Bucks County Tourism Grant Program and the Michener Art Museum’s 35th Anniversary Initiative.

*Lunch is not included. However, snacks and refreshments may be purchased at the museum and there are many local restaurants in town.

Artbridge is thrilled to celebrate and share more about our talented members each month. NJ Artist, Aurelle Purdy Sprout is featured in the Feb 2023 edition.

As an art teacher now retired, I have enthusiastically resumed my painting career. I retired seven years ago after teaching art at Montgomery Township Schools for twenty years, and various other public and private schools for a career spanning thirty-five years. Steering me back to the artist within, I am grateful for a fellowship with the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation as an artist-educator with a grant to develop my artistic endeavors in particular and the artistic endeavors of my students (and the entire school, in general) in 1998. The grant also enabled me to participate in numerous travel excursions and mini-grants and to discover art resources and instructors in this area since I grew up in Pittsburgh, spent time in California and Lancaster (PA), and eventually settled in the Lambertville area in 1996.

Exhibiting now, I have been in numerous juried shows such as Phillips' Mill, Ellarslie, D&R Greenway, New Hope Arts, West Windsor Arts, and Artsbridge. I have had the honor of receiving several art awards at juried exhibitions. Since retiring, I have had two solo exhibits, one at the Present Day Club, Princeton, and the other at the Bank of Princeton, Lambertville. A two-month duo show in Lambertville began early spring of 2020 but was taken down abruptly due to COVID. I was in a duo exhibition at the A-Space at New Hope Arts, in October, ‘22. A solo show is slated for April ’23 at The Present Day Club.
